In Dubai, Big is Better

In Dubai, you notice the construction right away. Pretty much every street you turn onto, there are tons of unfinished buildings. I got the sense that there was such a rush to get all the buildings up and make Dubai look like a big, international city. I think they’ve rushed into it a little too quickly. The Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, is huge; you can see how the city wanted to go all out to attract people. The motto of “go big or go home” definitely isn’t something they joked around with here. I find the way they built the Burj very interesting. They had to design a way to send the cement up that many floors (160) and still keep it at the right temperature. It was genius to put ice in the cement mixture—that’s something that not many builders had probably tried before. Then again, this is Dubai.—Curtis Fornarotto C’11
